We’re focused on making a meaningful difference to communities across Suffolk. How? By listening to our people, learning from what they say and creating a culture of mutual respect, where everyone works together to achieve great things. As an Archivist at Suffolk Archives, you’ll be as keen to collaborate, build a bright future, and celebrate our rich heritage as we are. So, to make a positive impact, connect with us and connect with a fantastic career. Reimagine the possibilities.
Your role and responsibilities
you'll utilise your skills to appraise and acquire archival materials, including sorting, cleaning, cataloguing and packaging
establish relationships of trust with key stakeholders, including depositors, donors, and researchers
identify priorities within the collections and engage volunteers and students in various roles, supporting them through projects to completion
through workshops and tours, you'll engage with members of the public and students to raise the profile of Suffolk Archives and its rich collections
utilise your knowledge to advise and support staff and customers on the use and handling of archival materials, including assisting with enquiries around sensitive records
A typical day may see you meeting depositors of material, working in the strong rooms with the archives, cataloguing a collection of archives, assisting with enquiries and research, or conducting workshops and tours as part of our outreach programme.
You will need
a good basis of archival knowledge, either through qualifications or experience in a relevant environment
commitment, enthusiasm and innovation to the development and preservation of Suffolk’s heritage
an approachable and personable attitude who can initiate and build on key relationships
a keen interest in promoting the work of Suffolk Archives beyond traditional audiences and being an advocate for what we do

We encourage new ideas and fresh perspectives to contribute to the exciting and important work of Suffolk Archives.

The team
The wider team is committed to promoting the importance of Suffolk’s history and heritage both within and beyond traditional audiences.
The Collections Team brings together a group of enthusiastic individuals dedicated to caring for and preserving Suffolk’s archival history, both for the present, and future generations.
Joining the Suffolk Archives team, you will be surrounded by knowledge and expertise drawn from many different walks of life.
The team works from The Hold, a state of the art heritage building, operating an important public service and running various other public and private events.
Hybrid working is possible, but the majority of our work is in the office as we take pride in working with our archival material and being present to assist with our public service.
Empowering Everyone
We’re big believers in potential, possibility and the power of different ideas. We’re always searching for ways to encourage, respect and enable everyone to be the best they can be. We want to represent the diverse communities we serve. We welcome applications from all individuals, especially those from groups that are currently underrepresented in the organisation, as shown in our Workforce Equality Report.
