Researching institutional involvement in Transatlantic Slavery: a guide for archivists, researchers & institutional stakeholders
Researching institutional involvement in Transatlantic Slavery: a guide for archivists, researchers & institutional stakeholders
Archivists are increasingly placed on the front lines of sensitive historical research into institutional histories and transatlantic slavery. Developed by the London’s Records of Slavery network under the UKRI-funded Medicine and the Making of Race project at King’s College London, this practitioner-led toolkit focuses directly on the day-to-day operational realities, practical constraints, and corporate pressures faced by modern archivists.
Drawing on the collective experiences of a network of 24 financial, educational, and heritage institutions, the toolkit features in-depth project case studies from the Bank of England, Lloyds of London, and Lambeth Palace Library. It provides actionable frameworks for managing research design, communicating with internal executives and external stakeholders, and navigating institutional risk. The resource also includes troubleshooting of common dilemmas, key reflections and recommendations of those who have undertaken this work, and signposting to other relevant resources.
