The ARA is looking for contributions to a special diversity and inclusion edition of ARC Magazine, which will be published in November 2020. Diversity is a very wide topic so for this edition we are inviting contributions which focus on race, ethnicity and cultural issues.

The lack of diversity in the record-keeping profession continues to be the focus of discussion and debate. Recent widespread protests around the world in the wake of the murder of George Floyd in the USA and the activism of the Black Lives Matter movement have renewed calls among record-keepers for collaborative working, practical actions and long-lasting changes that will lead to the diversification of our workforce, our user profiles and our collections.

While contributions will be welcome from everyone, we are particularly keen to hear from BAME people with experience of working in record-keeping and who may feel their voices are not heard. This could relate to your work or problems and issues you have faced in qualifying or obtaining work.

This is an opportunity to share your ideas and experiences, and to discuss what positive actions you think archivists, records managers and conservators need to take to effect meaningful and transformative change.

Contributions could focus, for example, on personal experiences, diversifying the workforce, engaging with under-represented audiences and users, and collecting and collections.

If you are thinking of submitting an article, please email Jenny Moran, ARA Board, Diversity Portfolio (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). Articles should be around 400-800 words and should be sent to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by Friday 4th September. Please state ‘Diversity Issue’ in the subject line and attach any accompanying images for your contribution.

We are happy to consider shorter pieces, especially if you are submitting a personal account of your experiences in record-keeping. Because of the sensitivity of the topic we are also willing to publish some anonymous contributions, but please discuss your requirements with Jenny. All discussions will be confidential, although decision-making may need to be shared with the editorial team.
