As this Parliament draws to a close, the ARA has formally thanked Dr Hywel Francis MP for his work as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Archives and History. Dr Francis was given a framed montage of photographs from his time as Chair of the Group at a small dinner on 9 March. The inscription read 'with deep gratitude from your friends in archives’.
Dr Francis, an MP since 2001, is stepping down as an MP in May.
To coincide with the end of the Parliament, a Report of the work of the All Party Group since 2008 has been published. Dr Francis was Vice-Chair of the Group from 2008 to 2010, Chair from 2010 to 2014 and Co-Chair (with Lord Clark of Windermere) since June 2014.
Each All Party Group will have to re-register after the general election. Lord Clark will lead the re-registered Group. A number of Lords are Officers of the Group (Lord Bew, Lord Boswell and Lord Aberdare); MP Officers are Tristram Hunt and Chris Skidmore.
Dr Francis is photographed with his gift, standing at the exhibition dedicated to the Chartists in the Houses of Parliament. Dr Francis, as Chair of the All Party Group, led the call for recognition of Chartists within Parliament. The 2013 All Party Group lecture was on the Chartists and a special seminar for archivists on Chartism was also held in Parliament.
Dr Francis was Professor of Continuing Education at Swansea University before becoming an MP. He founded the South Wales Miners’ Library at the University and has written widely, particularly on the 1984 Miners’ Strike.
