Honorary life membership of ARA awarded to Julian Thomas

Honour recognises 'significant contribution to bookbinding andconservation' 

julianthomasThe ARA has awarded an Honorary Life membership to Julian Thomas

The life membership – confirmed by a vote at the Association’s AGM -  reflects Julian’s significant contribution to bookbinding and conservation. Julian retired from the National Library of Wales in 2010 after more than 40 years. He began as an apprentice and rose to head the conservation section from 1980. He was awarded an MBE in 2012 for his services to conservation science and bookbinding.

Julian was an instructor on the ARA’s Training Scheme for Conservators and taught personally taught 51 students through the scheme.

Julian was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 1996 and President in 2007. His work is prominent in public and private collections in the UK, Europe, USA, Russia and Japan.
