Parchment and Stationery Bindings Virtual Series -...

  • ARA’s Section for Preservation and Conservation are pleased to announce our first online series of talks on the subject of parchment and stationery bindings. These will be advertised over the following weeks and will conclude with a Q&A session with our hosts.

Our final speaker is Katherine Beaty of Harvard Library's Weissman Preservation Center. She will be talking to us about Tacketed Stationery Bindings of the Harvard Business School Medici Collection and their Conservation on the 26th August 16:00-17:00 BST over Zoom.

From as early as the 14th century, tacketed stationery books were designed for heavy daily use and had to live up to the task. The traditional structure of stationery bindings was born from the bookkeeping and accounting traditions born in Italy. Using images from the Medici collection at Baker Library at Harvard University, Katherine will illustrate key features and associated terminology of Italian tacketed stationery bindings, and explain the conservation approach at Harvard.

Katherine is a rare book conservator at Harvard Library's Weissman Preservation Center. For the past twelve years, Katherine has been treating rare books from the Harvard Library collection, with a special interest in parchment, Islamic and non-western bindings, and investigating historical book structures. Over the last six years, she has been conserving early Italian account books from the Harvard Business School’s Baker Library. Katherine earned her M.A. from the Buffalo State College Art Conservation program with a specialization in book conservation, and is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation.

Our aim is to create a friendly and relaxed environment so please feel welcome to join us with a glass of your favourite wine (if it is safe and appropriate to do so) or a mug of tea, curl up somewhere comfortable and enjoy!

This talk will be recorded and available to view on the ARA website, options to maintain privacy will be available to participants.
