Parchment and Stationery Bindings Virtual Series -...

  • Virtual Training Programme – Parchment and Stationery Bindings

ARA’s Section for Preservation and Conservation are pleased to announce our first online series of talks on the subject of parchment and stationery bindings. These will be advertised over the following weeks and will conclude with a Q&A session with our hosts.

The next speaker of this series is our very own Victoria Stevens ACR of Library and Archive Conservation and Preservation Ltd. Presenting Dispatches from Fleet Street: Conserving the Perkins Bacon Delivery Books on the 19th August 16:00-17:00 BST over Zoom.

Perkins Bacon & Co. were a firm of London Fleet Street printers, the collection is held within archive holdings at the Royal Philatelic Society of London. Following the successful application to the grant funding bodies, National Manuscript Conservation Trust and the Pilgrim Trust, Victoria was tasked with the conservation of 11 volumes from the Delivery Book collection. These volumes were the only ones to survive in their original mid-19th Century binding structures making their conservation of the utmost importance. In this session you will learn of the challenges this project presented, the considerations and the techniques Victoria used to go about conserving these hugely important volumes.

Victoria is a library and archive conservator accredited by ICON. She has worked in written heritage conservation for over 20 years, mainly in the central library and college collections of the University of Oxford but also in museum, educational and religious libraries and archives. She manages her own UK-wide conservation practice and preservation consultancy from her lovely studio in Reading, UK. Victoria is an assessor for The UK National Archives Archives Revealed scheme and a Collections Audit assessor for the Association of Independent Museums. She is a wonderful advocate for our profession who is currently serving as an Icon accreditation assessor. We are extremely proud to have her as a committee member of the Archive and Records Association for both the Preservation and Conservation Group and the Section for Archives and Museums.

Our aim is to create a friendly and relaxed environment so please feel welcome to join us with a glass of your favourite wine (if it is safe and appropriate to do so) or a mug of tea, curl up somewhere comfortable and enjoy!
