Basic Conservation for Archivists
8th October 2019, 10:00 – 16:30
Venue: Centre for Research Collections, Edinburgh University Library, 30 George Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9LJ
This event aims to provide archivists with the tools to care for and maintain their collections through basic conservation. Delegates will have the opportunity to learn about document cleaning, storage and monitoring, and identifying common pests through both informative talks and hands-on practical sessions. Lunch is not included.
10:00-10:30 - Registration and Tea/Coffee
10:30 – “Some Dos and Don’ts of Basic Conservation” (Richard Aitken, Senior Conservator, Highland Archive Service)
11:10 – “Environmental Management” (Katharine Richardson, Preventative Conservator, University of Edinburgh)
12:00-13:00 – Lunch (not provided)
13:00-15:00 – Practical Workshop (Emily Hick, Special Collections Conservator, University of Edinburgh)
The workshop will include the following elements:
- Basic Cleaning: How to make a cleaning tray and clean objects with a smoke sponge
- Making a Book Shoe
- Making a Four Flap Box
15:00-15:30 - Tea/Coffee
15:30 - “Looking Through the Microscope: Identifying Common Pests” (Katharine Richardson, Preventative Conservator, University of Edinburgh)
16:30 – Close
Supplies will be provided courtesy of Conservation by Design.
