  • Managing and understanding Compassion Fatigue and Secondary Trauma 

    A one day CPD event presented by Martin J Smith PhD 

    Venue: Friends’ Meeting House, 6 Mount Street, Manchester, M2 5NS

    Compassion fatigue and secondary trauma are both real yet often ignored issues for many professions. This engaging workshop helps allow staff opportunity to explore in an informal and safe environment the challenges faced when working with upsetting records, the impact this has and ideas for identifying and dealing with emotional distress, compassion fatigue and secondary trauma. 

    Key subject areas

    • Define and understand key terms such as, vicarious or secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, and PTSD. 
    • Gain some understanding of how these conditions develop in us and colleagues. 
    • With the use of case studies look at and identify the five stages of compassion fatigue. 
    • Spotting the signs in ourselves and others and how these conditions can significantly affect our ability to help others. 
    • How to support and manage these conditions and develop effective and prompt interventions. 
    • Some exercises and techniques which can significantly help reduce the impact of traumatic work and situations that  cause emotional distress. 

    Course Tutor

    Martin Smith is a specialist trainer in communication, interpersonal skills, conflict management and personal safety with nearly thirty years training experience. He is also a psychotherapist with a private practice specialising in the treatment of anxiety, depression, stress, phobias and post traumatic stress disorders. He has been in clinical practice for nearly twenty years and also works as an associate for the East Midlands NHS Professional support services. 

    A senior lecturer in psychology, psychotherapy and the social sciences at Nottingham Trent University he also presents to a variety of Public and Private Sector Organisations both here in the UK and in the United States of America, designing and writing training programmes as well as individual personal development programmes and personal coaching strategies. 

    He is a life member of the Open University Psychological Society and a senior accredited member of the British Association of 

    Counselling and Psychotherapy - BACP. He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in psychotherapy working from solution focused and brief therapy methods. He has a Bachelors degree in psychotherapy with specific focus on clinical hypnosis and a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. He is a member of the prestigious International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association - ILEETA as well as The Institute for Leadership and Management – ILM.
