11:00-11:30 Short Term Contracts & Your Long Term Career - Personal Experiences of Surviving in the World of Temporary Conservation Contracts

    Emma Nichols - Conservator

“In recent years, cuts and financial pressures on institution budgets have left a lack of funding for permanent positions. This seems to have hit the conservation profession particularly hard and has led to a rapid increase in the number of institutions relying on short term contracts and external funding to carry out projects and provide them with conservators. These positions are regularly filled by conservation graduates or conservators early in their professional careers, eager for experience and therefore initially more accepting of living around less stable contracts, which require them to be flexible and adaptable. Having been on temporary contracts for my first four and a half years post qualification, and with many friends in the profession in a similar position, this subject is one close to my heart and one I was keen to explore. Both employees and employers can feel anxious or awkward talking about temporary employment and this presentation will share thoughts, look at the pros and cons, and present suggestions we can all apply in making temporary contracts as successful as possible.”

11:30-12:15 The effects of hormones on our thinking and quality of work

    Emanuel Knowles – Personal Trainer

Emanuel will discuss how working repeatedly in the same position puts the muscles and the skeleton under a lot of stress. This leads to areas of the body becoming inflamed and the brain to produce hormones to create a route of least resistance in the body for the job to get done. He will explain how this will affect the quality of your work and ultimately impact on the health of your brain.

    12:15-13:45 Lunch (not included)

13:45-14:30 Stress Management and Relaxation Technique

    Heather Thorne

Explaining the physiology of stress and describing the physical and emotional symptoms of stress. We then look briefly at the causes of stress and simple management techniques. I will then lead us in a relaxation exercise that can be done sitting down.
