    This ARA NW training is aimed at archivists and others who manage audio archive material. We start the day with an update from the North West’s Unlocking the UK’s Audio Heritage hub at Manchester Central Library. Following on from this, Rob Perks and David Govier of the British Library’s Oral History department will cover the practical, technical and ethical issues around the selection, collection and preservation of oral history and other recorded spoken word on multiple digital and analogue audio formats. Documentation, creating access (onsite and online) and promoting your oral history collections will also be covered.

     

    There will be lots of opportunities during the day to ask questions. There will also be an opportunity to visit the Lancashire Archives Oral History Digitisation Studio

    • Identifying what you have (discs, cassettes, open reels, DAT, digital files)

    • Storage (analogue and digital) short-term and long-term

    13.30-14.15 - Oral History Ethics and Partnership Working - Rob Perks, BL

    • Laws that affect oral histories (copyright, Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information)

    • Ethics (informed consent, confidentiality, Creative Commons)

    • Working as an archive partner with oral history projects

    14:15-15.30 - Archiving, Access and Promotion - David Govier, BL

    • Oral history workflows: arrangement, accessioning and cataloguing

    • Documentation that needs to be collected alongside recordings (recording agreements, summaries)

    • Creating access (onsite and online) and promoting your oral history collections
