Distance Enquiry Survey 2025

Distance Enquiry Survey 2025

Distance enquiry services provide remote research assistance to archive users who are unable, for whatever reason, to visit in person. This includes responding to email and postal queries, conducting document lookups, providing copy services, and offering paid professional research, transcription, or translation services.

The data collected and the interpretation into analysis will help to prove the value of archives, both locally and nationally. Furthermore, it enables archive services to benchmark their work and record changes over time. Whilst this headline report focuses on the national or overarching picture the benchmarking report enables comparison at a home nations level (England, Scotland, and Wales) and by type (Local, National, and University).

The 2025 survey is the 7th in the series where archives invited their clients to provide feedback on the service they have just recently provided. There are three reports:

Headline report

Benchmarking report

and a historic report, illustrating the changes over time at the individual archive level. The historic report spans all seven surveys that commenced in 2013.
