The Volunteering in Archives Action Plan
The work in this area is informed by the ‘Volunteering in Archives Action Plan’. This is a forward plan shared and endorsed by a number of sector bodies. Within ARA work in this area is coordinated by the Volunteering Sub-Committee. Improving evidence-gathering and evaluation
ARA undertakes research into the use of volunteers in the sector with a view to informing future policy, guidance and training. See Reports and Case Studies here.
Sharing good practice within the archive sector
ARA facilitates the Archive Volunteer Co-ordinators Network. This is an virtual network (using Google Groups) that enables members to share information and ask advice on all matters relating to the management of volunteers.
ARA has developed good practice guidance in the use of volunteers in collections care and is looking to develop further guidance on volunteer management, as well as encouraging members to use guidance from other organisations. For details see Reports and Case Studies here.
Encouraging national recognition of volunteers’ contribution to archives
ARA runs an annual Volunteering Award to celebrate the work of volunteers in UK & Ireland, and to showcase good practice in volunteer management. For details see Archive Volunteering Award.
Providing appropriate training opportunities within the sector
ARA’s volunteering roadshow model has now been adopted as part of the formal core training programme. Further tailored training support is under development.
The Volunteering sub-committee is also contributing to the work of the Diversity Working Group, and the Careers Advice Working Group.
