Archivist (part time), Alan Baxter Ltd (closes 23/10)

Archivist (part time)

Alan Baxter Ltd is a leading firm of structural engineers, founded in 1974 and based in London, working on highly significant historic and new buildings, with additional expertise in conservation, urban design and transport.  The firm’s well-resourced and comprehensive paper archive is located in rural south Lincolnshire and records half a century of professional activity.  Its documents and drawings are regularly consulted both internally and by external parties.  It is envisaged that the successful applicant will be based in either our London or Lincolnshire sites and will make regular visits from their primary workplace to the other location.  The exact work pattern is negotiable.

The paper archive includes older documents, as well as printed versions of our recently produced digital drawings and other documentation.  We are looking for a professional person who will embrace the opportunity to maintain and develop this unique, highly valued resource.

The role

We are seeking a part-time archivist who will process and archive documents and drawings from the firm’s current work and recent past.  The archivist will follow written guidance about the documents that we archive, but will also liaise with our engineers, technicians and secretarial staff in order to print and collate the appropriate documentation.  The job will involve maintaining our files of records of ongoing jobs, as well as archiving completed jobs.  This will involve careful accessioning, sorting and arranging material.  With help from our Knowledge Manager, the Archivist will also retrieve, and scan, drawings required by our own team or the owners of buildings on which we have worked.

The Archivist will not be responsible for the management of the Archive building, but will monitor and contribute to the physical care of our documents.  He or she will also oversee the collection of books and other materials that are kept at the archive, although the archiving of our job-related documents is the primary responsibility.
