Elizabeth Shepherd

Elizabeth has been Professor of Archives and Records Management in the Department of Information Studies at University College London (UCL) since 2011 and she was Head of Department from 2018 to 2023. Her research interests are in rights in records, links between records management, government administrative data and information policy compliance. Since 2017 she has led the AHRC-funded project with care experienced co-researchers, MIRRA (Memory-Identity-Rights in Records-Access). She has just completed a monograph about the life and work of pioneering women archivists in early 20th century England as part of her research into the development of the archive profession. She serves on the editorial boards for key journals and on the UK national research assessment panels RAE2008, REF2014 and REF2021. She has published numerous articles and (with Geoffrey Yeo) the best-selling book Managing Records: a handbook of principles and practice (Facet Publishing, 2003) and is author of the monograph, Archives and archivists in 20th century England (Ashgate, 2009).

Having served the Society of Archivists/ARA in a variety of capacities between 1989 and 2006, she is looking forward to renewing her engagement with the sector in the role of ARA President, bringing her international expertise in education and research to bear on current professional concerns
