What does a conceptual model do?

One of the questions that came up at the session at the ARA Conference this year (2014) was about the conceptual model being developed by EGAD (the ICA Experts Group on Archival Description). Links to resources explaining the work of EGAD, what a conceptual model is and why we need one can be found on the EGAD Resources page. Then again, a sense of conceptual models can also be gained by reading around their development and application in other domains, e.g. FRBR in the Library domain (a useful primer can be found here) and CIDOC CRM in the Museums and Cultural Heritage domain (an online tutorial can be found here). EGAD will be consulting on a draft model at some point in the future, but for now, if you have any comments or further questions about conceptual models, please leave them below.
