Obligations of Members of the Council

All members of the Council of the Society should try to attend every meeting of the Council during the year.  If a Councillor is unable to attend a meeting, he/she should notify the Honorary Secretary of the Society.  Members can refer to Article 61(g) of the Memorandum and Articles of Association for details of the criteria for Council meeting attendance.

All Councillors are expected to serve on at least one of the Executive or Standing Committees of the Society as required.  This enables the workload to be shared among as many people as possible and provides an opportunity for Council members to gain valuable experience in the various specialist areas of the Society’s activities. All Councillors are encouraged to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Society and to support other Society events such as the Annual Conferences and regional meetings where possible.

Any matter raised by members of the Society directly or through minutes or Council papers should be dealt with immediately and not left until the next Council meeting; Councillors should contact the relevant officer of the Society for assistance if necessary.

While any decision taken by the Council may be circulated, all matters discussed within the Council are confidential unless the Council should otherwise specify.  Councillors may be required to make a declaration of interest in accordance with Section 17 of the Society’s Bye-Laws.

Councillors should if possible seek repayment of any expenses from their employers.   If this is not possible, the Society is will refund reasonable expenses (e.g. Standard Class rail fare) for attendance at authorised meetings.  Detailed information on claiming expenses from the Society is contained in the section on administrative matters produced by the Society’s Office.
