The Council

The management of the Society is vested in the Council. Council determines the policy and direction of the Society, with the input of the membership at the Annual General Meeting. Council is also responsible for the ratification of all business carried out in the Society’s name by other Society units.

The elected honorary officers of the Society (eg Chair, Secretary, Treasurer) sit on Council. They are responsible, with the Executive Secretary whom the Society employs, for ensuring that policy is effectively and efficiently implemented. The officers have delegated authority from Council to pursue any opportunities that are consistent with the current aims and objectives of the Society.

The day-to-day work of the Society is also delegated: to the Society’s standing Committees, Sub-Committees, Groups, and Working Parties (see links).   With their specialist knowledge, these Society units provide advice and recommendations which allow Council to make proper decisions and to discharge its responsibilities efficiently and flexibly.
