The Role of the Special Interest Groups

Introduction
 
There are currently seven special interest groups in the Society.   These are:
 
  • Archives for Education and Learning (AEG)
  • Business Records Group (BRG)
  • Data Standards Group (DSG)
  • Film, Sound and Photography Group (FSPG)
  • Preservation and Conservation (PCG)
  • Records Management (RMG)
  • Specialist Repositories (SRG)
 
Membership
 
Members of the Society who wish to register as members of any particular group may indicate their intention when first they join the Society or when they renew their subscription.  
 
Membership of one special interest group is free to all members.   There is a nominal charge to members for each additional group joined.
Non-members of the Society may attend general meetings of the special interest groups subject to the payment of an appropriate fee but may not vote.
 
Group functions
 
The special interest groups provide a framework and structure for the Society’s membership to assist the Society to operate, not only as an integrated professional organisation, through their members specialist knowledge, but by providing an unique forum for the interchange/exchange of ideas and shared experiences for people occupying similar positions in their own particular interest areas.
 
The group Executive Committees also act as a forum for consultation by the Council on matters appertaining to their own special area of operation and, through their representatives on the Council, are able to bring their expertise to bear on overall Society policy.
 
The groups also provide training opportunities for their own members and, more generally, for the rest of the Society in collaborative ventures with each other or in conjunction with the Society’s regions.
 
The special interest groups, through their member’s expert advice and input, play a major role (in association with the Society’s Professional Affairs and Communications Committee), in the production of the Society’s Best Practice Guidelines series of publications. series of publications.
