The following recordings were made by participants in a Society of Archivist's newly qualified archivists' training day as part of the morning workshop on archives and oral history entitled 'Engaging the Community'. The workshop of conducted by Craig Fees and supported by David Lee. The interviews took place in a small lecture hall and lasted about 25 minutes. The participants were divided into groups of three and spaced around the room. The observers in each group watched and listened, and at the end of the interview took five further minutes to reflect back to the interviewer and interviewee any insights, thoughts or observations they may have had. To expose the participants to something of the range of formats with which an archive might have to deal, recordings were made using a variety of media: hi8 video, conventional audio cassette, reel to reel tape recorder, DAT, and mini-disc, using a combination of hand-held, stand and tie-clip microphones. The training day took place at the Institute of Education in London on 27th April 1999.

The following recordings were made by participants in a Society of Archivist's training day entitled 'An Introduction to Oral History'. The workshop was conducted by Craig Fees and supported by Beth Thomas. The interviews lasted about 40 minutes with participants divided into groups of three and each placd with their respective tape recorders in the four corners of the room. Each group had an observers who would reflect back to the interviewer and interviewee and insights and observations that they made during the interview. As with the previous workshop, an attempt was made to expose participants to a range of recording formats that may appear in an archive but a power outtage meant that only machines with battery power could be used. Recordings were made on hi8 video, conventional audio cassette and DAT using a combination of table and tie-clip microphone. The workshop took place in the upstairs assembly hall of the Workmen's Institute at the Museum of Welsh Life, St Fagan's, Cardiff on 13th March 2000.
