Launch of the BRG

Business Records Group - News:

The Business Records Group was officially launched on 3 May 2001, with an afternoon of presentations and discussions, followed by a launch party generously hosted by Unilever.

Jeannette Strickland, Chair of BRG, introduced the Group to the gathered members, and explained its inception as a body to represent the interests of archivists who work with business records, both within corporate archives and in other repositories. There followed a lively series of discussions as the members sought to define further the Group’s role and the activities it should undertake.

Key conclusions arising from the discussions were that the Group should survey members to gain more information about their needs and skills, and that it would aim to keep in touch with members electronically. There was a general consensus that the Group should not be afraid to organise training events that dealt with the basics: accounting records, cataloguing accruals and appraisal were noted as hot topics. Members were generally agreed that the Group had much to gain from collaborating with organisations with whom there was a natural overlap: the Business Archives Council, the Society’s Specialist Repositories Group and Records Management Group, and the Records Management Society.

Having undertaken to progress all these suggestions, and come up with strategies for moving the Group forward, the committee led the way to the launch party, and discussions continued amid the food and drink!
