Scotland's History: The Top 10

Did the Act of Union take precedence over the Wars of Independence? Has Irish immigration to Scotland had more impact that the development of Scottish cities during the industrial revolution or did Burns have more impact than any of these events?

These are just some of the fascinating topics which were discussed by a panel of historians for a series of programmes broadcast throughout November 2006 on BBC 2 building up to a public vote on the final shortlist of the 10 most significant events on 30 November.

The University of Dundee, in association with the Scottish Council on Archives, Caledonia TV and BBC 2, presented a public debate on 2 December 2006 to consider these burning issues.

A panel of five experts acted as 'advocates' for their chosen topic, chaired by Professor Tom Devine, author of The Scottish Nation. The audience were then invited to vote on what they considered to be the most significant event in Scotland's history.
