The Scottish Council
on Archives is pleased to present Documents that Shaped
the Nation in the recently refurbished and impressive Rutherglen
Town Hall.
The event will give
4 “Champions” the opportunity to speak to an invited
audience, explaining how and why their particular document has
shaped Scotland as a nation. The documents selected represent
a balance between the obvious historically significant and the
more modern socially significant.
The speakers will comprise
Professor Ted Cowan who will be speaking on the Declaration
of Arbroath, Tommy Sheridan MSP who will be discussing the
Abolition of Domestic Rates etc (Scotland)
Act 1987, Professor Richard Finlay who will speak on the Treaty
of Union 1707 and Wendy Alexander MSP who will make the case
for The Scotland Act, 1998. The event will be chaired
by Brian Taylor, Political Editor,
BBC Scotland.
The programme will
also include a panel session and an opportunity for questions
from the audience. This will then be followed by a vote
for The Document that Shaped
the Nation.
To conclude the evening
and to celebrate St. Andrew’s Night in style, a drinks reception
has been kindly provided by South Lanarkshire Council.
I look forward to what
will be a unique and interesting evening, which is sure to stimulate
debate and perhaps even some controversy.
