SoA Response to the British Library Consultation Document

On 25 April 2006 the British Library published a consultation document: The British Library’s Content Strategy – Meeting the Knowledge Needs of the Nation. This sets out the Library’s proposals for what information resources they should collect and connect with, in order to meet the needs of UK research, both today and in the future.

Their strategy has been developed in response to the rapid pace of change in scholarly communications and also in response to the Library’s recent integration of its major catalogues which puts them in a position for the first time to be able to consider their collection as a unified entity.

The consultation document forms the first part of a two-stage process. In this first stage the British Library has articulated the overarching principles of their content strategy, and in addition have applied these in some detail to the areas of arts & humanities and social sciences. In a second, later, stage, they intend to consult in detail on their science/technology/medicine (STM) strategy.

There were 14 issues outlined in the document on which the British Library particularly welcomed comment and Peter Anderson has replied on behalf of the Society of Archivists.
