SoA and CILIP Joint Declaration
Members will be aware that for a number of months, the Officers of the Society have been reaching out to establish new contacts with many of our sister organisations both within and without our sector. At a recent meeting of representatives of the Society and The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), it was agreed that appropriate concordats be developed in order to facilitate closer relations between the two organisations. Accordingly, it was agreed that the respective Councils should draw up a Memorandum of Understanding between the two bodies for ratification.
I am pleased to announce that this Memorandum of Understanding has now been considered and unanimously agreed by both the respective Councils and is produced below for the benefit of members:
SOCIETY OF ARCHIVISTS/CILIP Joint Declaration
The Society of Archivists and CILIP will work together in areas of mutual interest including:
Establishing clear procedures to enable a rapid joint response on specific issues where necessary;
Including each other in committees as appropriate;
Developing training programmes for shared target audiences;
Establishing joint task groups as required;
Facilitating access to each other’s mechanisms for influencing government policy as appropriate;
Providing joint support for, and engagement with, other sectors as appropriate;
Coordinating conference planning and participating in each other’s conferences and events;
Maximising effectiveness and minimising duplication of effort;
Promoting national and regional events organised by either body or its subgroups;
Disseminating information on key strategic issues through the effective use of Society of Archivists and CILIP publications, web sites, etc.
The Council believes that this Memorandum will usher in an era of positive and fruitful cooperation with CILIP and the first developments under the agreement should take place in the very near future.
