Oxford 2007 ICA Society of Archivists Seal Conservation Congress

Available below are the unedited papers, lecture notes and PowerPoint presentations of the majority of contributions to the Seals Conservation Research Congress held at Merton College, Oxford, UK in 2007 courtesy of the Society of Archivists Research & Development Fund and the International Council on Archives, organised by the Bodleian Library Conservation Dept and hosted by Merton College, Oxford.

The Congress was attended by 15 specialists from 8 different countries, invited to contribute following a call for experts. The subject of the Congress was recent research on the nature and conservation of seals and sealed documents and included presentations describing the current state and previous trends in conservation practice in a number of national institutions. None of the presentations represents the views or preferences of the Society of Archivists or ICA.

It is hoped that the conservation recommendations made by the ICA Seal Congress in Madrid 1995, published by the ICA, may be updated following this 2007 Congress. A conservation treatment survey template was produced during and after the Congress as a way of recording and disseminating conservation approaches used by different institutions world-wide for those researching seal conservation.

Those wishing either to contribute to this document with their own researches and approaches, or to see what has been uploaded to it so far should contact the Secretary of the R&D Fund on the first instance, Chris Woods, at research.fund@archives.org.uk.
