‘Climate and Crisis: Tackling it Together’

Book here - early bird rate closes 1st May

ARA’s 2024 conference will take place in the new BCEC, a purpose built conference venue in the centre of Birmingham.

The 2024 theme is ‘Climate and Crisis: Tackling It Together’ and over three days we address the major crises and challenges facing our communities and our profession, learning from our community and building stronger responses, together. The Climate Crisis is the challenge of an era with the responsibility to take action falling upon us all. Our profession must respond, learn from best practice and find new ways to contribute to the global effort. Our work faces other crises not least funding and resourcing challenges. We are better tackling this together too, and we want the conference to be a catalyst for this.

We are very pleased to announce that Lorraine Finch will be our Friday keynote speaker. Lorraine is director of LFCP, which is accelerating the cultural heritage sector’s climate and environmental actions through research, knowledge sharing and resource creation. She is also a sustainability leader who advocates on the international stage for sustainability in cultural heritage participating in conferences, leading workshops and training, publishing books and articles and collaborating with leaders in the field in the USA and Europe. In recognition of her role as founder and Chair of the Institute of Conservation’s Sustainability Network, she was presented with a David Middleton Sustainability Award. She is also a Director of Climate Museum UK and an accredited conservator of archives, photographs, film and sound.

Our Wednesday keynote will be Alistair Brown, Head of Museums, Libraries and Archives Policy at the National Lottery Heritage Fund.  Alistair leads the Heritage Fund’s policy on archives, museums and libraries and across the UK, and has supported the Fund’s delivery of a wide range of projects in the sector, including the Fund’s recent Dynamic Collections campaign. Prior to working at the Heritage Fund, Alistair was the Policy Manager for the Museums Association where he led on a range of policy initiatives including the review of the Code of Ethics for Museums, the delivery of the Museums Change Lives campaign, and a series of successful sector advocacy campaigns. He has also previously worked in cultural and regional policy roles for the Scottish Government and the European Commission.

Expect a versatile programme that we hope will cater to our wide variety of stakeholders, an action-packed Information Village and social networking functions so that we can carry on the conversations across three separate evenings.

Themes include:

  • climate advocacy and education,

  • passive and sustainable storage,

  • digital recordkeeping and the cloud,

  • conservation,

  • forward planning for climate change,

  • sustainability of the recordkeeping profession,

  • climate collecting.

We had a phenomenal turnout for ARA 2023 - 'Communities' and we would like to build on this and invite you to join us for what promises to be an exceptional conference.
