Major sector grants announced from HLF

ARA is partner in two 'Skills for the Future' grants

The ARA is a partner in two sister grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund to bring new trainees with a diverse range of backgrounds into archives in England and Scotland and address skills shortages in the sector.

The National Archives has received a new grant of nearly £1m for its Transforming Archives programme (successor to the Opening Up Archives project) and the Scottish Council on Archives more than £500,000 for its Opening up Scotland’s Archives project. Both grants, each for three years,  are given under  the HLF’s Skills for the Future programme.

Both projects will work in similar ways.  A number of archives in England and Scotland will host work placements at archive and heritage services. Training and support will be given throughout to ensure that trainees  gain practical archival skills.
Recruitment of the trainees will begin in summer 2014.

The ARA will have a representative on the boards of both projects.
