Architecture, Building and Construction Survey under way
One year project now under way at The National Archives
The building and construction sector makes a major contribution to the British economy, yet its history and archives are not well known or understood. A survey has begun, both to identify companies whose records have not yet been surveyed or deposited and to establish the nature and location of what they hold.
Funded to run for one year, the project is a partnership between The National Archives and the Business Archives Council, and supports the aims of the National Strategy for Business Archives (England and Wales). The information gathered will be added to the National Register of Archives (NRA), improving awareness of architecture, building and construction records.
The project will also promote best practice in record keeping, to ensure the safety of collections at a time of real threat to all categories of business archives.
While the survey is limited to England and Wales, there is scope for cooperation with Scottish partners to extend the project. Results of the survey will be publicised on the Business Archives Council and The National Archives’ websites and promoted in construction industry and heritage publications.
