The ARA has welcomed the decision – announced earlier this week – by Northamptonshire County Council to suspend drastic changes to public access hours at Northamptonshire Archives. The changes were announced in July and resulted in a wave of local opposition from a wide range of groups.

The ARA’s CEO, John Chambers, said:

“This is a sensible decision by Northamptonshire County Council after its deeply-flawed announcement in July that put at risk the county’s local heritage and its ability to attract future funding, among many other downsides. We very much hope that a wide consultation with the local community will now follow and that the council will commit to maintaining a minimum of 21 hours free access per week, so that local citizens may continue to research and explore their local heritage.”

The ARA wrote to the leader of Northamptonshire County Council following the changes announced in July. Members can access a file copy of the letter here.
