The Archives and Records Association’s ‘Don’t Risk it! Know Your Records’ campaign works to promote and support the specific needs of members in records management (RM) functions and those keen to enhance their understanding of records management issues.

The first phase of the campaign focused on promoting awareness of RM directly to senior executives. The current, second phase centres on helping members strengthen their internal advocacy capability, eg in promoting the virtues of good RM (and warning of the dangers of bad RM) within their organisation. In 2016, we ran a suite of training on generic internal advocacy techniques and approaches.

With the kind support of Standard Life Aberdeen, ARA Scotland are now pleased to offer a free half-day training session to members focusing on ‘Risk Registers’, the tool that most senior managers and Boards use to assess their organisations’ exposure to risk. The training will show how to build and populate your own RM risk register, promote the inclusion of RM risk factors in your corporate or organisational risk register (eg, how to make them ‘Board-friendly’) and how to use a risk register to advance RM priorities more broadly.

This training will focus on practical approaches and provide you with bespoke materials. To get the most out of it, you should seek access to your organisation’s own risk register in advance or (if you are denied access) prepare a simple list of any RM-related issues that you believe could have serious financial, legal/regulatory and/or reputational consequences for your organisation.

To ensure concentration on the practical needs of individual attendees, this session will have a maximum limit of 15 people. And to facilitate free discussion, the session will be social-media free and not be recorded and all participants will undertake to observe the Chatham House Rule.

This training suite aimed principally at ARA members working in a records management function, though it is also open to conservator and archivist members with an interest in RM issues.

    Lunch is provided.
