GETTING STARTED IN ARCHIVES: a new professionals training day

The Archives and Records Association, Ireland (ARA,I) is pleased to announce a full day

training event for current archival students and new professionals at the John Paul II Library,

Maynooth University on Thursday, 22nd June 2017.

In addition to sessions on interview skills, how to prepare a CV, applying for tenders and

setting up as self-employed, the day will include presentations from three

established professionals currently working in records management, digital archives and

academic archives, outlining their experiences and advising on how best to begin a career in

their chosen areas. The Chair of the ARA's Section for New Professionals will also discuss

their work and initiatives for recently qualified archivists and records managers.

We also invite four attendees to participate in informal lightning talks - short talks of less

than 10 minutes discussing their experiences (good and bad!) as newcomers to the archival

profession. Maybe you would like to discuss how you ended up in archives, what you have

discovered about the archival job hunt or what skills have been the most useful in your first

jobs. Please indicate on registration if you are interested and we will be in touch!

About the speakers:

Mark Farrell is a founder of Arcline which provides archives management, records

management and library cataloguing services in the public and private sectors.

ARA Section for New Professionals.

Brendan Murphy is the founder and Principal Consultant with Crossmore Consulting, which

provides information and records management services. He is also a founder member of the

Sinéad English is the founder of Hilt-Back Yourself and lectures on Career Management at

ARA I Training Day DIGITAL

PRESERVATION FOR

ARCHIVISTS

Booking is now open for the forthcoming ‘Digital Preservation For Archivists’ training event to be held at the Irish Architectural Archive, Dublin, on 12 March 2015. Organised by the Irish Region, in conjunction with the ARA Section for Archives and Technology the training day will be facilitated by Simon Wilson of the University of Hull and will include two case studies from Ireland.

Simon is Senior Archivist at the University of Hull, based at the Hull History Centre. In 2010 Simon was seconded to the role of Digital Archivist on the AIMS Project (a collaboration between the Universities of Hull, Stanford, Virginia and Yale) which sought to identify commonality in processing born-digital archives. The combined experience from the project led to the AIMS White Paper http://www.digitalcurationservices.org/aims/white-paper) published in 2012 advocating good practice with regard to born-digital material. Since then Simon has spoken widely on practical digital preservation and in particular seeking to encourage individuals and organisations to take their first steps in digital preservation. Simon is currently Chair of the Archives and Records Association Section for Archives & Technology.

ARA IRELAND'S 2015 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The ARA,I Committee is inviting you to attend our AGM on 12 March 2015, at the Irish Architectural Archive, Merrion Square, Dublin 2. The notice, an agenda, and the minutes of last year's AGM are included at the bottom of this message.

The AGM coincides with a day of training on digital preservation, the details of which will be circulated later this month. 
 
At the AGM, we will elect new officers for the positions of Chair, Secretary, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, IAR Chair, and Newsletter Editor. Job descriptions for these posts are also included at the bottom of this message, and if you are interested in any of these, please get in contact with the relevant office holder for an informal chat. ARA I will hold our next Business Meeting on the evening of 12 September, at 6pm at the Guinness Storehouse. This follows the half-day of training on "Adapting Buildings on Archives", the programme for which is attached in the previous post.

ARA I are pleased to announce a half-day of training on 12 September 2013, with the theme "Adapting Buildings for Archives". It will be hosted by the Guinness Storehouse, and is an excellent opportunity to see the Guinness Archive service's new spaces, but also to avail of their offer to do a tour of the Storehouse for a reduced price

Access and Use

Archives Records Association Ireland in conjunction with the Irish Society Archives and the Information and Records Management Society Ireland will be hosting a training event focusing on Medical Records - Content, Management, Access and Use.

This event is being held in the National Museum at Collins Barracks on Thursday 13th June 2013.

Attendance at this event is free for members of the three organising bodies (for non-members there is a fee of 20 euro) and includes refreshments and light lunch. Places are limited to 60 and must be booked in advance. ARA I Summer Business Meeting 

13 June 2013

You are invited to attend the Irish region's next business meeting, to be held at the unusually early hour of 4.30pm, on 13 June, at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks. Please find attached a notice for the event, the agenda , and the minutes of the last business meeting (12 October 2012).

We apologize for foregoing the usual notice period of six weeks. The meeting is tied in with a joint IRMS/ARA meeting to be held on the same day which we trust will be of interest to many you: this year's meeting is held under the theme of medical records, and will host a number of record curators and scholars who will throw light on the issue of access to, and longterm preservation of, records created in medical institutions. A full programme will be issued within a week; the event will be free for members.

We are inviting nominations for the committee posts of Training Officer/ Website Officer, and you will find descriptions of these, as well as a nomination form, attached also: please either send your filled-in form to me (as specified below), or hand it in at the AGM where we will hold the election. There is a precedence of the training office being held in tandem since work can easily be split between two people; if you wish to share the post therefore, please send in one nomination form each, letting us know that you wish to share the office (with someone in particular, if applicable).

The proposed merger of the National Archives of Ireland into the National Library of Ireland will now not go ahead. Mary Minihan, writing in the Irish Times, Friday 16 November 2012 explains: 'The thinking behind the plan to merge the National Archives into the National Library “does not look compelling”, according to a report sent to Minister for Arts Jimmy Deenihan and released under a Freedom of Information request...The June 2012 report was commissioned by the trade union Impact, which opposes the merger. It was released to The Irish Times by the department following a request under the Freedom of Information Act...“The proposed merger of the NLI [National Library of Ireland] and the NAI [National Archives of Ireland] would undoubtedly damage these credentials without significant financial investment in both entities.”...The report criticised the decision to merge the institutions “without any consultation” with the affected bodies... “This is not how decisions should be reached or policy implemented.” It warns that an “ill-conceived” merger would send out a “very negative and ambiguous” message about the attitude of policymakers towards an important aspect of the economy, “and indeed of Irish democratic principles”.

On 31 October, Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, has outlined the full set of reforms now being progressed for each of the 12 organisations that are funded by his Department. 
The implications for the National Archives of Ireland, National Library of Ireland, National Museum of Ireland and Irish Manuscripts Commission are:
• The existing National Archives governance model to be extended to the National Library and the National Museum. This new National Museum and Library Advisory Council, focussed on fundraising and philanthropic opportunities, to serve pro bono and to operate in place of the existing boards.
• The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to provide support services - in areas including legal services, finance, HR, IT, and procurement - to these institutions allowing more staff from these institutions to provide services to the public.
• The National Archives of Ireland to continue to operate, as currently, with a statutorily independent Director, within the ambit of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and with a reduced Advisory Council serving pro bono.

Summary of Reform Proposals

The Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Mr. Brendan Howlin TD, 31 October 2012, updated Government colleagues on the rationalisation of state agencies 'Update on Rationalisation of State Agencies No funding to be made available in 2013 estimates for bodies not rationalised unless in an agreed rationalisation programme Over 200 bodies to be rationalised/merged'.

On the proposal to 'Merge National Archives & Irish Manuscripts Commission, into National Library' - 'In order to achieve the greatest possible savings and efficiencies, it was decided that these rationalisation measures would be best implemented by deploying the existing National Archives (NAI) governance model to the National Library (NLI) and the National Museum (NMI). As is usually the case, we pair the autumn Business Meeting off with a day of training. This year's training is a half-day event focussing on employment potential, and application procedures. 6th Annual Joint Meeting of the ARAI and the IRMS

The Archives and Records Association Ireland and the Information and Records Management
Society Ireland are pleased to invite you to their sixth annual joint meeting in the Irish
Architectural Archive, 45 Merrion Square, Dublin 2 on Thursday 13th September 2012.

The theme of the meeting is Practical Tools for Retention. The meeting is a platform for
professionals who are applying the principles and standards of records management to speak
about their activities and their approach in ensuring future access to the records in their care.
Present and ongoing challenges facing both archivists and records managers operating in Ireland
will be addressed. The meeting will include presentations by practising barrister Eugenie Houston,
who will address the legal imperatives of data protection for records management, and
professionals from the world of archives and records management who regularly advise clients on
retention schedules. Where applicable, delegates may bring their retention schedules to facilitate
discussion and exchange during workshops in the afternoon.

4 November 2011

ARA Ireland Winter Business Meeting will follow the training day at 5.15pm at the Irish Architectural Archive, Merrion Square. Please find the attached agenda and minutes of our most recent Business Meeting, 07 July 2011. The meeting will be followed by a wine reception to welcome the new M.A. students of Archives and Records Management and the Director of ARA, John Chambers and newly appointed Head of Public Affairs, Marie Owens will be in attendance at the business meeting with a view to meeting the membership and discussing current issues.

We would like to see as many members as possible attend the meeting: the engagement and support of an active membership are vital in efforts to meet the challenges faced by the sector in Ireland.

Members not attending the training event are of course welcome to attend the meeting and wine reception. Equally we would urge those attending training to remain for the meeting.

Strategic Communications Training Day

The training day will be facilitated by DHR Communications. DHR Communications have designed a programme in recognition of the cultural and political sphere we work in. The aim of the day is to provide Archivists with information to assist in the formulation of media policy and approach, training on securing and maintaining media interest in Archival projects and activities, with pointers on how to effectively communicate professional aims to politicians and policy makers and in engaging support for your Archive service.

ARA Ireland, in association with ICHAWI present a 'Caring for Collections' workshop at the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin Castle, Dublin 2. This workshop is designed to give practical conservation advice and guidance on handling and access, basic cleaning, storage and the display of archives; including paper, bound volumes and photographs. The speakers will use a combination of practical demonstrations and lectures. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion throughout the day.

There is a €10 charge to members to attend this workshop. Numbers are limited, so early registration is essential. Mr Patrick Brennan, Project Manager of the MSPA Project will give a short talk on the status of the Military Service Pensions Archive Project: what has been achieved so far, the current tasks at hand and the general direction for the near future.
